--luffy spoilers--
Luffy's father is Monkey D. Dragon, named by the World Government as the most wanted and dangerous criminal in the One Piece world. His headquarters are in Peladrago.
Dragon has been rarely seen, however he was the one who appeared in Loguetown to save his son from being executed by Buggy, before stopping Smoker, allowing Luffy to escape.

Luffy's grandfather is Monkey D. Garp, a famous Marine. He is the only person who Luffy is afraid of, due to the hellish traning he endured as a child. It is still unknown why he left him in the care of friends before leaving.
Garp wanted Luffy to be a Marine, and blames Shanks for poisoning Luffy's mind with pirate stories. However, Luffy claims that he has always wanted to be a pirate.

It is still unknown who his mother is.
--zoro spoilers--
Not much really, except that Zoro's attacks are all puns, and that Tashigi bears a strong resemblance of his dead childhood friend Kuina. In fact, Tashigi bears such a strong resemblance in her looks, fighting style and personality that it makes Zoro extremely uncomfortable to be around her.

Zoro's signature attack, oni giri, is a pun on the fact that as two words, oni giri means demon slash, but as one word is a riceball. To further this, he also has a yaki oni giri (burning demon slash). This can be translated to 'baked rice ball'.

His name actually does NOT come from the legendary swordsman Zorro. Zoro came from the Japanese word zorome, which means palindrome; a number that is the same when read backwards or forwards. Thus, his birthday is 11/11. His family name from a real pirate, Francois I'Ollonais.

He was initally going to be a bodyguard of Buggy's. He still retains his awful sense of direction.
--nami spoilers--
Nami's wanted poster picture was revealed to have been taken when a Water 7 reporter claimed that he was from a fashion magazine. Needless to say, she willingly posed.

She is also the only Straw Hat to complain about having a bounty, which currently stands at B16 million. Interestingly, this puts her above Buggy the Clown (B15 million) a character introduced in the same arc as her, and equal with another cat-themed character, Captain Kuro.

Nami's nickname is dorobo neko; literally burglar cat. However, it can also mean manstealer.

She was named the third smartest character in East Blue, beaten only by Ben Beckman and Captain Kuro.
--usopp spoilers--
Usopp's attacks commonly end in boshi, or star (eg hissatsu firebird star). He is also famous for appearing on Luffy's and Sogeking's wanted posters when its not really him.

Usopp's name is a pun on uso, the japanese word for a lie, and Aesop, a legendary old man who was famous for telling stories. His nose is also linked to pinnochio.

Usopp's stories have had the uncanny (and hilarious) ability of coming true. For example, he told Kaya that when he was seven he stepped out on an island that was actually a giant goldfish's poo.
In the Little Garden episode, a giant goldfish was about to comsume them before Dorry and Brogy interfered.
They then reminisce how they had landed on Nanimon Island, but it was really the goldfish's poo. Usopp himself is seen thinking, "Why is this all so familiar??"

He names Chopper, Luffy, Mr. 0, Kaya and Django as the most gullible characters. He also holds the title for the best liar in the series, as well as the one who can run the fastest.

According to Mr. 2 Bon Clay, he possesses the world's funniest/weirdest nose.
--sanji spoilers--
A running gag with Sanji is that he often takes the guise of someone else, and is very elusive. For example, he was Mr. Prince during his time in Arabasta to Mr. 0, and because no-one could provide a picture of him, an ugly sketch was used.

He and Zoro have an unusual habit of, when fighting together, naming a ridiculous time (three seconds) in which to defeat a large number of opponents.
--chopper spoilers--
According to Usopp, Chopper is the most gullible character in the series.

Usopp and Chopper often insult each by referring to the other's noses (long nose! blue nose!)

He will often run around screaming for a doctor until he realises he is one.

He is also portrayed as Chopperman (Chopper with a cape) in one of Eiichiro Oda's shorts.
--robin spoilers--
Not much to spill now her past is out in the open, eh?

She will often say macabre things. ("It's about fifty metres. If you don't make it, you'll die." and "If he was eaten, the water would be turning red.")

She is never portrayed in an exaggerated comic manner, but has been shown with the signature sweatdrop.

Robin remains the only character Nami has NOT tried to boss around.

Using her powers, she crushed Franky's...family jewels...until he agree to join.
--franky spoilers--
Franky yells "Hentai" when he is transforming, instead of using the usual term, henshin. This confuses many opponents as to why he is declaring he is perverted. This joke is carried over when he is forced to streak down the streets of Water 7 after the Franky Family and Straw Hats stole his pants, as a way to force him become a Straw Hat.

He was called 'Babanky' by Iceburg when they were teens; a play on mixing his name with baka, which means idiot. Franky then in turn calls him 'Bakaburg'.
--going merry spoilers--
The Going Merry's successor is a ship twice her size, named Thousand Sunny (King of the Beasts). It has a lot of new features, including the following:
an aquarium
a slide
a swing
a fridge with a lock (no doubt to keep luffy's enormous appetite in check)
4 paws that serve as anchors
sauna/bath house
sick room
a lawn
a pool

and heaps more!
--CURRENT STORYLINE
The next saga will be called the Florian Triangle, with the first arc called Thriller Bark. Here, Luffy and co. come across a barrel with a skeleton in it, who introduces himself as Brook, the Gentleman Skeleton. Luffy asks him to join his crew, which Brook initally accepts but declines later on, as he explains he doesn't have a shadow, meaning that if he steps into sunlight he will instantly die.

His skeleton state was because of his devil fruit powers, as when his body was murdered the fruit allowed his soul to wander until he found it again. The search for his body was caused by Gecko Moria, one of the Shichibukai, as he was the one responsible for stealing his shadow and placing it in a an ancient zombie warrior, Ryuma.

All the StrawHats agree to help Brook get his shadow back and in the process they discover Thriller Bark, Moria's hug ship which is home to thousands of zombies who have come to life through other people's shadows, like Brook. However, while trying to get Brook's shadow back, the StrawHats lose their own, and discover that a zombie with Luffy's shadow put into it has been revived and was a terror when it was alive, known as 'Oz', with Luffy himself imprisoned.

So now the StrawHats need to get their shawdows back and escape Thriller Bark before the zombies get them...
